John Mayer has his fans stuck in a state of euphoria after releasing his brand new single and music video, via Columbia Records, entitled Last Train Home. The song, released last June 4, is magnificently layered with retro-styled sounds and beats, which also serves as a homage to classic ‘80s pop-rock songs.
A New Yet Familiar Sound
The brand new single features a new sound and vibe which may catch die-hard fans of the singer-songwriter off guard. However, the song still manages to exhibit all of the classic elements that we love from the artist. John Mayer’s signature guitar riffs, twists in keys, and quotable heart-wrenching lyrics are still very much present, which makes the song unmistakably his.
Furthermore, Mayer is able to embrace retro-pop touchstones with soft rock tones that make for an easy listening experience. The song is reminiscent of the golden years of Toto and serves almost as a tribute to the popular ’80 band. Included in the song are percussionist Lenny Castro and keyboardist for Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, and Michael Jackson, Greg Phillinganes, both of whom are notable members of the aforementioned band. In addition to these artists, rising star Maren Morrison makes a cameo in both the song and music video to add even more depth to the song. Speaking of the music video, fans are treated to a fantastic ‘80s throwback complete with old film-looking footage, pink electric guitars, classic Grease-like hairstyles, and of course, an abundance of leather jackets.
A Critically Acclaimed Track
Last Train Home has received notable acclaim from music critics and fans alike. Billboard praised the track for its “slick rock production with an ’80s polish, filled with keyboard stabs that remind of Toto, and guitar licks galore” while Vulture wrote that it’s “80s enough to make Bryan Adams take that first real six-string back to the five-and-dime.”
Fans have also been expressing their adoration for the track since the latter parts of March 2021. Mayer took to TikTok to creatively tease a few bars of his new song during a photo shoot, and another featuring his adorable dogs. In the process, these videos have generated over 1.4 million views — an indication of John Mayer’s continuous popularity in the music scene.

John Mayer is a unique artist who is on a lane that is completely his, simply put there is no one like him. His remarkable talent as a Grammy Award-winning artist, a celebrated songwriter, and an iconic guitar player proves that he is a force to be reckoned with. Mayer has gained several accolades throughout the years including three #1 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 for his albums; Heavier Things (2003), Battle Studies (2009), and Born and Raised (2012). Furthermore, he has acquired a staggering total of seven Grammy Awards including “Song of the Year” for Daughters back in 2005.
John Mayer has not remained stagnant throughout the years and Sob Rock isn’t a comeback for the artist. Mayer has been keeping himself busy as the lead guitarist/vocalist for the band Dead & Company which was founded back in 2015. The band consists of former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann, along with John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, and Jeff Chimenti. Together, Mayer and the band have completed six tours, playing to over 3.4 million fans, and have become a record-breaking stadium act.
2021 is shaping up to be a big year for John Mayer with the album’s release as just the beginning of greater things up ahead and we can’t wait to witness all of it. Fans of the artist can now pre-order/pre-save the album prior to its July 16 release. This is the perfect time to celebrate all the milestones that John Mayer has achieved so far with the best songs from John Mayer’s current discography as we excitedly await Sob Rock’s release.
