Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a very important celebration practiced throughout Mexico as a memorial for those who have passed. Traditionally, Nike releases a sneaker pack in time for this special occasion each year to push forward the heritage. Fortunately, Nike has decided to carry on this tradition and release its 2020 “Day of the Dead” Collection.
In Mexico, traditional ofrendas, or altars, are prepared in homes as the centerpiece of the occasion. These altars are typically decorated with handmade crafts such as the papel picado, or perforated paper, and flowers. Using these ornaments as inspiration, the Nike 2020 “Day of the Dead” Collection incorporates these elements into each sneaker design.
Air Jordan 1 Mid
Leading the collection is the Air Jordan 1 Mid, which boasts of a three-tone color scheme, reflecting the colors commonly seen during this celebration. The upper is mainly composed of shades of wine and clean white. While the swoosh, stitching, and tongue label are in marigold.
Adding to the colorway, the world “Familia” is inscribed on the pair’s mudguard for further relevance. Overall, this rendition of the Air Jordan 1 Mid holds a lot of heritage and will definitely be a pair sneakerheads have their eye on.
Air Max 90
Next up is the Air Max 90, which makes use of louder colorway through shades of orange, red, green, yellow, and wine throughout the sneaker. Rather than taking the more subtle route like the Air Jordan 1 Mid, this pair rocks a very intricate pattern consisting of different shapes, and Swooshes.
Blazer Mid
For a much more subtle option, the Blazer Mid is the pair for you. With white dominating the upper, there are very subtle hints of yellow, red, and blue. Yellow outlines the Swoosh and is also the color of the round insignia found on the sneaker’s heel. Red outlines the pair’s middle guard, while the toe is in a light pastel blue.
Daybreak Type
Rounding up the collection is the Daybreak Type. The upper is composed of white, navy blue, yellow, and wine. These colors are evenly distributed throughout the mudguard, side panel, toe guard, and swoosh. Similar to the Air Jordan 1 Mid, this sneaker incorporates the words “Para Mi Familia”, which continues through both heel tabs.
While the price of the collection is yet to be confirmed, the sneaker has already been released in Mexico and will release globally on October 15. As of this writing, the Daybreak Type is confirmed to drop on October 15 for Php 4,595.
