The first release of the much-anticipated YEEZY x GAP collaboration has just surfaced, and we don’t know how to feel exactly. On June 8, we got our first look at the baby blue YEEZY GAP jacket, which is made out of recycled nylon. While the piece is meant to represent the high fashion design and quality of both Kanye West and Gap, it resembles something more like a trash bag—not so high fashion. Despite this, the jacket presents the possibility to be viewed as a statement piece, challenging the status quo. Here are our thoughts on Kanye West x GAP’s baby blue jacket.
First of all, it must be recognized that divisive designs are nothing new to Kanye. From his introduction of sock shoes to Yeezy Foam Runners, Kanye does not stick to the traditional means of fashion design. It is for this reason that the first installment of the YEEZY x GAP partnership is so exciting. On one hand, we have a fashion house that has been around for more than 50 years, sticking to conventional clothing and designs. And on the other hand, we have a bellwether of contemporary fashion who dictates the latest trends and ideas.
With that being said, the YEEZY x GAP collaboration needed to churn out a product as peculiar as the baby blue YEEZY GAP jacket because anything more traditional would defeat the entire purpose of the partnership. In other words, it just makes sense. However, this does not mean that we have to like the jacket. It simply means we have to appreciate what it stands for: the marriage between the old and the new.
And for a $200(~Php 9.6k), it is definitely expensive for a GAP piece, but since there’s that YEEZY association, it will get sold out quickly anyway—maybe fetch high resale prices in the future.
If you’ve been a fan of Yeezy designs in the past, chances are you would like this piece as it fits seamlessly with other baggy Yeezy articles of clothing. On the other hand, if you’re a loyal patron of GAP clothing, having enjoyed their reliable pieces for the past decades, chances are this jacket is too much for you to chew on. Yet, why not try something new?
